Surrounding Area
Vancouver Island is a large island in British Columbia, Canada, one of several North American regions named after Captain George Vancouver, the British Royal Navy officer who explored the Pacific coast of North America between 1791 and 1794.
The island is 460 kilometers (290 mi) in length and 80 kilometers (50 mi) in width at its widest point. It is the largest island on the western side of North America at 32,134 km2 (12,407.0 sq mi) and the world's 43rd largest island, Canada's 11th largest island and Canada's second most populous island after the Island of Montreal, which has 1.3 million more people.
The Comox Valley consists of three distinct communities: Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland. Centrally located, the Comox Valley serves as an excellent base for exploring surrounding Island areas. Mt. Washington and Forbidden Plateau ski resorts are located here offering many ski events and modern, efficient service.

The Comox Valley is the gateway to Strathcona Provincial Park, British Columbia's oldest park which covers 253,773 hectares (626,819 acres), boasting six of the seven highest peaks on Vancouver Island as well as the Island's last remaining ice field, the Comox Glacier. Over 100 kilometres (62 miles) of hiking trails with hiking highlights such as the 444-metre (1,443-foot) Della Falls.

Four golf courses are open year round as well as three seasonal courses, mini-golf, go-cart and speedway attractions. Winter fishing for halibut, cod and sole are very popular activities and many professionally guided boat charters are available. Salmon fishing is hottest at Cape Lazo, King Coho and Bates Beach. Shore fishing at King Coho can reward you with spring salmon upwards of 9 kg. (20 lbs) Freshwater fishing is available in the many, well stocked lakes. Sea Kayaking in the protected waters of Georgia Strait is a very popular activity and local outfitters can provide you with all you need, including lessons. Herons, bald eagles, seals, sea lions, porpoises and the occasional grey and killer whales can be seen on the Comox Valley waterways. Mountain biking is well established in the Comox Valley on trails ranging from easy
forest roads to 'slickrock downhill' and 'classic gnarly rainforest single track.'
